FISHERS, Ind. — The city of Fishers is retrofitting an abandoned grocery store to be a mass coronavirus vaccination site.
Mayor Scott Fadness and the Hamilton County Health Department have been working this week to get an old Marsh store ready to have people who are eligible to come and get vaccinated.
“We’re getting this done, and help is on the way,” Fadness told WISH-TV. “All of our communities around Indiana need to get creative and have a sense of urgency about leveraging their resources to create these spaces to we can get this vaccine into the arms of our residents as soon as humanly possible.”
The city has had to make some minor cosmetic upgrades to the building that has been abandoned for over a year before they can set up kiosks inside for people to come get their shots.
Right now they are using a temporary location to administer vaccines, but when the site is fully operational, Fadness says they plan to vaccinate up to 10,000 people per week, depending on supplies.
“The important thing is that we act and lead and do on behalf of our residents. This is an example of that and we will continue to do that until our people are taken care of,” said Fadness.
On Tuesday, the Trump Administration released even more COVID vaccine doses to the states. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said he’s confident that will help pick up the pace of getting people vaccinated as soon as possible.
As of right now, you are only eligible to get the vaccine if you are a front-line worker, first responder, or some other type of essential personnel. You can also get vaccinated if you are over the age of 80 by appointment only.
