FAIRMOUNT, Ind. — A two-year-old boy died Tuesday after finding and firing a gun in his Fairmount home.

Fairmount police were called to a home on North Main Street just after 12 p.m. on a report of shots fired.

According to Indiana State Police, 2-year-old Leighton Owings was in a bedroom of the home while his mother, 22-year-old Caci Seals, fed an infant in a front room.

While in the bedroom, Owings found a loaded Ruger nine-millimeter handgun. Evidence indicates that Owings pulled the trigger, firing a single bullet.

Owings was taken to Marion General Hospital, where he died.

Police are still looking into what happened.

Fairmount police were called to a home on North Main Street just after 12 p.m. on a report of shots fired.

Officers arrived and found the boy, who was unresponsive. He was taken to Marion General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Coroner Stephen Dorsey said, “it was reported that the toddler located a handgun in the home and discharged it, striking him.”

The shooting is still under investigation. Police are trying to determine how the boy was able to find and fire the gun.

An autopsy is being scheduled, according to Dorsey.
