Today marks the first day that competitions can take place in soccer, volleyball, boys tennis, and cross-country and this Friday is the opening night of the 2008 Indiana high school football season. What a great time of year!
I am sure there are a great number of student athletes around the state that are excited for this week for a variety of reasons - the first game of their freshman year, their first varsity game, their first starting assignment, or maybe the beginning of their senior year - but regardless of the reason it's an exciting time.
I am looking forward to a number of things this fall sports season.
First will be the opening of Lucas Oil Stadium. The first competitive events to be hosted in the brand new building will not be a Colts game or an NCAA Final Four, but will be high school football games. There will be six high school games this weekend (2 on Friday and 4 on Saturday) before the Colts make their pres...

Here is an entry that is a month or two overdue.
In my last entry I talked about some of the fantastic events
that marked an end to the spring sports season and I’ll conclude that here.
Among the things I’ll remember from the close of the 2008 spring
sports season is a visit with then-Greensburg High School senior Alex
Meyer. I caught up with Meyer after he
pitched the Pirates to their first-ever 3A baseball semi-state in a win at New
Palestine. It was an interesting day because

as an advisor, was dealing with the stress of the draft while also preparing
for the biggest game of his high school baseball career.
As I later found out, Meyer and his family had been
approached about being p...

A very busy time in the IHSAA year has come to a
conclusion.
Over a span of 33 days that ended June 14, there were 21
different levels of postseason play (i.e. softball sectionals, girls tennis
regionals, boys track state finals, etc.) covering the six spring sports. Included in that number are seven State
Championship events (girls tennis has separate team and singles/doubles State
Championships).
With the weather presenting all sorts of problems, that
meant many of these postseason events overlapped and plenty of
adjustments were made, affecting everyone from the IHSAA,
athletic directors, and principals to coaches, players, parents, and plenty of others.
I have witnessed a number of terrific events over the past
few weeks and want to share some stories and thoughts from those experiences
over the course of a few blog ...

Welcome to the first entry of my blog, which I hope will be
another avenue to keep up with the happenings of Indiana high school sports.
First of all, we hope that you enjoy the content here at
IHSAASports.org. As we continually add
to our content and improve the website experience, we are excited about the
opportunities to cover IHSAA sports in ways that have never been done before.
One of the first features I would like to make note of is
our coach blogs. We have been fortunate to
get the insights of phenomenal coaches like Carmel boys track and cross country
coach Chuck Koeppen, Delta tennis coach Tim Cleland, Pendleton Heights softball
coach Scott Hall and Lafayette Central Catholic baseball coach Tim Bordenet
throughout this spring season.
These coaches...
