Coach Tim Cleland's Blog

Lafayette Central Catholic head baseball coach Tim Bordenet has agreed to blog about the baseball season for IHSAASports.org.  Bordenet is in his 11th season at LCC as the head coach and is the winningest coach in program history.  He entered the season with 253 career wins with two stints at Central Catholic, which were separated by two seasons as the head coach at Muncie Central.

An Indiana All-Star as a player at Central Catholic, he played at the University of Evansville before transferring to Purdue University.  Bordenet got an early start in coaching, taking over the Knights’ program in 1991, while still a senior at Purdue.  That season Bordenet became the youngest head coach to win a sectional championship.

Under Bordenet, Central Catholic has won 1A State Championships in 2004 and 2007 and averaged 26.5 wins over the last six seasons, better than any other school in the state in that span.  Bordenet has also coached in the Colt World Series, leading the Hoosier North team to the title in 1999.

In addition to his coaching duties, Bordenet is also Athletic Director at LCC and serves as the President of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches’ Association.

Scheduling to Prepare for the State Tournament

At Lafayette Central Catholic, we try to live by the old adage “to be the best, you must play the best”.  Our philosophy has always been to use the 29 regular season games to prepare our team for the state tournament.  How do you do that?  I think you do that by putting together a schedule that is going to challenge your team every time it takes the field.  There are some games that may be “locked into” a schedule by conference affiliations, local schools, etc.  But every school has a certain number of games that they can decide who they want to compete against to complete their schedules.

Overcoming Obstacles

With the baseball season nearing the midway point of the season, most coaches have had to overcome obstacles during this first month.  In my 18 years of coaching, this has been the coldest, and at times, the wettest spring that I can remember.  The weather however, is just one obstacle that we as baseball coaches have to overcome.  For many kids, baseball is the second or third sport that they have played this year making it difficult for them to maintain a high level of enthusiasm.  Convincing a 15-18 year old kid that it is fun to play a sport in 40 degree weather when they are used to playing in the comfortable confines of a balmy gymnasium with large crowds can be an early season challenge.

In addition, with the school year winding down, there seems to be more distractions for our players to have to deal with than ever before.  At Cent...
